Planning staff presented a draft 2026 planning commission calendar proposing the commission continue to meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 8 a.m., with adjustments for Veterans Day and holiday cancellations. Staff said it shortened the submission closing window from 45 to 37 days to speed case processing and estimated the typical application-to-council timeline at about 60 days; staff added that moving meetings to Mondays that align with council could reduce that to 54 days but acknowledged commissioners generally do not prefer Monday meetings.
Commissioners debated the tradeoffs. Several members said they favored keeping two monthly meetings to provide flexibility for developers and avoid delays for residents and small projects; others preferred one meeting per month with the option to call a special meeting when needed. Staff noted that published dates create an expectation the commission will meet on those dates and that calling special meetings requires additional administrative steps and availability by commissioners.
A motion was made and seconded to schedule the next meeting for Jan. 14; the motion carried. Staff said it will bring back a revised calendar showing the one-meeting-per-month option and criteria for special meetings. Commissioners also briefly discussed the status of a previously approved car-lot project; staff said the applicants later backed out and the building is back on the market for lease, and that staff had completed state licensing paperwork but no further activity has occurred.
The commission adjourned for the year after the chair called for a motion to adjourn.
