City staff said the department previously relied on part-time coverage and that Dr. O'Donnell, who provides medical direction to regional partners and travels to meet with local staff, will improve communications and help meet Kansas Board of EMS requirements. Staff said the medical director will attend periodic meetings with department leadership and the regional hospital to review reports and protocols.
A commissioner asked whether Dr. O'Donnell's Wichita residence would affect coverage; staff replied that statewide coverage arrangements are common and that assigned medical directors frequently live outside the local jurisdiction but travel to meet with the department as needed.
A motion to enter into a professional services agreement with Dr. C. Joseph O'Donnell was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote; the motion carried.
