Milton board reviews and advances proposed 2026–27 school calendar; first day set for Sept. 1

Milton School District administrators presented a proposed 2026–27 academic calendar at the Dec. 4 board meeting, outlining instructional and contracted days, professional development scheduling and holiday breaks.
Administration said the district will build the calendar around 175.5 instructional days and 190 contracted teacher days, which include 10 professional development days (eight in August and two during the school year), two conference days for parent–teacher conferences and two paid holidays. The proposal sets the first day of school for students as Tuesday, Sept. 1, and the last full student day as Friday, June 4, with a half-day for teachers to finalize grades. Graduation is scheduled for Sunday, June 6 instead of the historically used Sunday before the last day of school to avoid conflicts with Memorial Day weekend.
The board discussed options for the week around Thanksgiving; two drafts were created: one with a virtual professional development day on Monday, Nov. 23 and no student instruction the rest of that week, and an alternate with on-site instruction on Nov. 23–24. After consulting Milton Education Association representatives, administrators said they adopted the option that provided a longer Thanksgiving break and that the MEA preferred the presented schedule.
Trustees asked questions about how virtual professional development days would work for secondary students whose teachers they had not yet met; Jeremy said those days include teacher introductions, a syllabus review and an assignment such as an initial reading or course-objective activity to help students prepare for the term. Board members also requested a clear published date for seniors' last instructional day; administration agreed to add a note before releasing the calendar to families.
No final vote on the calendar was recorded at the Dec. 4 meeting; staff said the calendar would be shared with staff and families the following day for planning.
