Board hears recommendation to pilot portable weapon-detection systems after early-year incident

District operations staff told the board that an early-year incident prompted a community roundtable of more than 500 people and an RFI to explore weapon detection systems. Staff outlined system limitations — including false positives from everyday items, false negatives for nontraditional weapons, bottlenecking at entrances, staffing needs for monitoring and secondary screening, system evasion through unsupervised doors, ongoing licensing and maintenance costs, and possible negative impacts on school climate.
Given mixed feedback from the community, staff recommended piloting one or more portable detection systems long enough to evaluate three areas: operational fidelity (including staff hours and throughput targets such as an expectation of approximately 15 students per minute), equipment effectiveness (detection accuracy and average alerts per 100 students), and the impact on school climate and safety (survey responses, secondary screening demographics and outcomes). The recommendation includes piloting at secondary schools and returning to the board on Dec. 22 with a decision about whether to proceed with a pilot.
Board members raised several concerns: potential costs of training and equipment, whether vendors would loan devices for long-term pilots (staff said initial vendor feedback suggests vendors typically do not provide long-term loaner devices), whether pilots should be rotated among schools or staged for longer periods to produce reliable data, and whether outside funding or community donations could defray pilot costs. Student council representatives who had polled classmates said students generally understood reasons for the proposal but acknowledged it would be a significant change. No formal pilot authorization vote was recorded in the meeting; staff said they would return with more detailed cost estimates and recommendations.
