Board member Meredith Whitman, who served on the bell-time committee, said the committee surveyed stakeholders and weighed trade-offs; she said the decision was difficult but intended to reduce transportation costs and bus runs. Administration estimated the schedule change would eliminate nine bus runs and save about $300,000 annually in transportation costs.
Several board members and parents raised concerns about impacts on high-school students’ early start times and after-school activities. Committee members said they considered those impacts and that the middle-school schedule change was intended to limit disruption to younger students and activity participation overall.
The motion to adopt the bell times passed by voice vote. Administration and the transportation department will provide follow-up statistics on how schedule shifts affect student activity absences and operational outcomes.
