Becky Shepherd, a member of the public, told the Clark County Board of Education she attended an RDC student performance and objected to a song from the musical Legally Blonde, saying it repeated a profanity and was "not appropriate for the singers, some of whom are not 13." Shepherd urged the board to create a review committee for material used in school programs and volunteered to serve.
"This song was not appropriate for the singers, some of whom are not 13," Shepherd said, adding she counted the quoted phrase 35 times in the performance. She said a family left midway and described the experience as "not a good look for Clark County Schools."
Later in the public-comment period a different speaker addressing the board said, "It was confirmed today by the county attorney that there are 2 individuals on the school board who are under a criminal investigation for misappropriation of funds" and asked that those board members "be suspended or relieved of duties immediately." The speaker identified themselves as representing "several concerned parents."
The presiding officer responded directly: "I called the county attorney as well today, and he had no information at all," indicating the board chair had not independently verified the allegation. The board did not take disciplinary action during the meeting and made no formal determination on the claim.
Board members did not debate the substance of the alleged investigation at the meeting; they acknowledged the allegation and recorded the public comment in the minutes. No formal inquiry, suspension, or vote related to the allegation occurred on the record during the session.
The board did take other actions during the meeting, including approving routine business and construction items (see a companion article for decisions and presentations).
