The Longmeadow building committee reported progress Dec. 16 on design work for the new middle school, outlining choices on finishes, site staging, athletic fields and sustainability measures as the project moves from schematic design toward more detailed specifications.
Superintendent Doctor O'Shea and building committee representatives summarized materials under consideration: a terrazzo main spine, linoleum in academic wings, limited carpet only where needed, polished concrete and rubber flooring in science rooms, and warmer color palettes for interior finishes. The committee previewed a two-tier, fully accessible auditorium and a full-size gymnasium with retractable hoops designed for multiuse.
Officials discussed athletic facilities: the proposed synthetic turf field would accommodate soccer, field hockey and lacrosse along with football, and peripheral elements such as benches, netting and an outdoor storage shed were under consideration. "That field design is progressing well," O'Shea said.
On sustainability, the committee heard a photovoltaic-readiness proposal from JWA recommending the project be engineered now so the roof and systems are ready for a solar array later. The committee is also seeking a tax consultant to help secure rebates and incentives available under the federal Inflation Reduction Act; the superintendent said pursuing those incentives can yield significant returns but involves a complex process that consultants commonly help navigate.
The committee discussed construction staging and temporary access off Woolworth Street; the layout shown has been reviewed and approved by local fire and police departments. Members asked clarifying questions about decision authority (the building committee sets final design scope with input from town officials) and about lighting and energy components. No final design decisions were made at the meeting; the building committee will continue refining materials and systems with design consultants and return with updates.
