Resident urges secure gun storage, cites post-holiday spike in unintentional shootings

At the Nov. 24 Northfield Public School Board meeting, Carrie Maynor used the public comment period to share holiday gun-safety resources and encourage secure storage of firearms in homes.
Maynor said she had presented to a Greenville Park PTO meeting and had received many messages from safety organizations, referencing Sandy Hook Promise and Brady United. She told the board there is a spike in unintentional shootings in the weeks surrounding Thanksgiving and New Year's and cited the estimate that "4,600,000 U.S. children live in homes with at least 1 unsecured and loaded firearm." Maynor encouraged the community to practice secure gun storage over the holidays and closed by thanking the board for the time to share the message. "I just encourage them to have a great safe holiday," she said.
The board's public comment policy (policy 206) allows residents three minutes and bars comments about specific students or staff; Vice Chair Corey Butler monitored the speaker's time.
