Northfield board reviews 2026–27 calendar and considers temporary high-school dean increase

Administrators presented a draft 2026–27 school calendar and a temporary staffing request at the Northfield Public School Board meeting on Nov. 24. No votes were taken; both items were scheduled for individual action at the board's Dec. 8 meeting.
Dr. Hillman said the calendar in the table file is "calendar version 6," explaining that Labor Day falls late next year so the district would likely start on the Tuesday after Labor Day and finish the academic year on June 11. He said the district developed the draft with meet-and-confer committees and multiple iterations; administration indicated it may return a 2027–28 calendar later in the winter as the district resumes a two-year adoption cycle.
On staffing, administration requested increasing a high-school dean from 0.6 to full-time (an increase of 0.4 FTE) for the second semester of the 2025–26 year. Dr. Hillman said the change is to provide additional leadership capacity for attendance, MTSS and other student-support activities and that the district would need to backfill Dr. Sean Dube's English classes. "We would need to backfill, Dr. Dube's English classes. That's 0.4 FTE for a semester," he said. Finance provided an estimated cost of $7,582 for the semester; board members asked administration to verify the salary math before the Dec. 8 action.
Both items will be returned to the board for individual action on Dec. 8; administration said it will provide updated cost verification and any additional scheduling implications.
