Alcantor said her community had experienced at least five recent ICE‑related arrests in the prior two weeks and recounted one case in which a man with lawful documentation was detained after officials said he failed to update an address. She said that claim was incorrect and that the man continued to receive official mail at his Wheeling address. Alcantor said the individual had been transferred to El Paso, Texas, and that a call from him described overcrowded conditions and lack of reliable access to food and water.
Alcantor framed the incidents as raising concerns about due process, accountability and accuracy of the information used to justify enforcement actions. She urged neighbors and the board to rally around affected families and to remain alert to aggressive enforcement practices.
President Horker acknowledged the comment but said the immigration situation is ‘‘complex’’ and that the board would not elaborate further at the meeting. No village action or formal staff report on the incidents was made at this meeting.
What happens next: Alcantor called for community support and awareness. The board did not announce any immediate follow‑up or investigation during the Dec. 15 meeting.
