Levy County School Board participants finalized the district's legislative platform headings after a briefing from Speaker 3, who summarized ongoing Tallahassee activity and recommended focusing on budget issues first. Board members agreed to three primary headings: (1) Budget — increase the Base Student Allocation (BSA) by 5% and seek language to hold public schools harmless from property‑tax reform; (2) Scholarships — push for transparency so "the money follows the student" and scholarship funding is accountable; and (3) Rural Renaissance — support consortium funding and shared services that benefit small and rural districts.
The decision came after Speaker 3 outlined state developments—including multiple property tax bills and estimates that certain changes could force large budget adjustments. "They think the Senate, the House maybe wanna cut 3,000,000,000 or more in the budget because if you do something with property taxes, you may have to backfill the physically constrained counties," Speaker 3 said.
Board members discussed exact language and scope. Several participants argued for a clear numeric ask: "Say 5% — let's do 5%," Speaker 2 said; the group then directed staff to write the verbiage. Members stressed the need to keep platform materials concise for use on postcards and advocacy meetings in Tallahassee. The board did not take a formal recorded vote at the workshop; members agreed to finalize wording and present the platform at the next scheduled board meeting.
Next steps: Speaker 3 offered to provide weekly or biweekly updates to Superintendent Bloom and district staff. Board members assigned staff to prepare the draft verbiage with the agreed headers and bullets for final review.
