We had over 21 veterans there," one representative said.
They also reported a teacher-originated "keep it or cut it" fundraiser for breast cancer awareness led by the CTE construction teacher, identified in the report as Mr. Matczak; students voted at lunch and the district raised more than $4,000 for the cause. The high school’s First Follies — described as a connected variety show involving theater and band — and student leadership participation in an off-campus ASB leadership conference ("Lask") were also noted.
On academic and postsecondary access, students said a college fair on Oct. 27 drew many representatives and that CWU offered on-the-spot admissions for qualifying seniors. Financial-aid nights for completing FAFSA were held in the high school library, and the SAT was also offered on campus. The report closed with anticipation for the winter sports season; the board heard that West Valley softball had finished third in state.
The report was presented during the communications portion of the board meeting and was followed by brief audience questions about school traditions, including one exchange about the identity of the school mascot, Randy.
