Commission approves moving forward on $39,500 workforce training grant for Beehive Industries

Knox County commissioners moved forward on a $39,500 appropriation from the general fund to the Industrial Development Board to support workforce training tied to an expansion by Beehive Industries.

The appropriation (Resolution 901) was presented by Doug Lawyer of the Chamber and company representative John Erin Jones. Staff and the chamber explained the recommendation uses an approach of roughly $500 per net new job; the expansion was described as creating about 74 new positions with an average pay above the county average (stated in the meeting as roughly $74,000 annually versus a county average of about $57,000).

Commissioners questioned whether the county should set a precedent of subsidizing training for an already-established private employer and asked for specifics about how the $39,500 would be used and the selection criteria for trainees. Company representatives said the funds would support entry-level recruitment and technical upskilling through partnerships with local technical colleges. Supporters said the investment was modest relative to expected local economic benefits and housing demand created by new jobs.

The commission moved the item forward with no recommendation after discussion and invited commissioners to visit the Beehive facility before final action.
