Athens — The Athens City Council unanimously approved resolutions declaring two buildings unsafe and ordering abatement and potential demolition following staff reports that one was storm‑damaged and the other fire‑damaged with no repair activity from the owner.
Eric (city staff) described the North Clinton Street structure as storm‑damaged and said staff "had those people removed" after discovering homeless occupants; he recommended condemnation to clean up the property. The council adopted a resolution authorizing demolition by city forces or a third party for a cost not to exceed $30,000.
For the 100 Sandifer Road property, Eric said the building burned in August 2024 and that the owner (referred to in the record as Millennia) has not submitted plans or pulled permits to rebuild. "They have yet to follow through to even submit plans for refurbishing the building," Eric said, and the council approved condemnation to pressure removal or repair.
Both measures passed by roll call vote, 5–0. Staff will notify property owners of the actions and proceed with abatement steps as allowed by the resolutions.
What’s next: Building Inspection will coordinate notices, utility disconnections if necessary, and abatement timelines. Council directed staff to follow applicable codes for demolition and to report back to the council on progress.
