Athens — The Athens City Council unanimously approved a $100,000 appropriation to Athens Main Street to administer an expanded downtown grant program aimed at supporting small downtown retailers and restaurants.
Mayor William R. Marks, who presented the measure, described the proposal as a continuation and expansion of a successful façade/grant program earlier administered with Athens Main Street. "We allocated some money. I think it was, like, 50,000 for an opportunity to assist small businesses downtown," Marks said, noting the program had been "very successful." He told council the funds are available in the city's Alcohol Fund and recommended using that source for the appropriation: "I would recommend, to the council to pull it from that fund if that's acceptable." The resolution directs the mayor or city clerk to enter into a contract with Athens Main Street for administration of the grant program. Staff and council members said the grant will return to council with program details and that recipients will require council approval before funds are disbursed.

Planning and city staff indicated the program will be structured to address unique needs of downtown merchants and will include eligibility and review steps.
