Craven County commissioners approve consent agenda, budget amendment and America 250 grant; multiple appointments made

The Craven County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 15 approved routine business items and several funding and appointment requests.
The board approved the consent agenda, which included minutes, tax releases, and an emergency services VHF radio budget amendment. The chair noted a $5,000 donation from the Independent Insurance Agents Association for improvements at Creekside Park and a $6,000 International Paper Foundation grant for West Craven Park facilities.
County staff presented a budget amendment in the amount of $29,797 to cover a recent retiree payout and related recruitment costs. The board voted to approve the amendment.
Craig Warren told commissioners that Craven County was awarded $30,000 from the America 250 NC grant program (established under session law 2023-143) and that the required 15% local match — $4,500 — will be provided by the Craven County Tourism Development Authority. The board approved a budget amendment to accept the funds and pass them through to the TDA.
On appointments, commissioners nominated and approved several individuals to county boards and committees. Sue Boyer was appointed to the ETJ Havelock Board of Adjustment by acclamation; David Warren was reappointed to the Fireman’s Relief Board of Trustees; Don Baumgartner, Chad Straubman and Bobby Darden were appointed to seats on the Highway 70 Corridor Committee and related roles; and Melissa Ward was appointed to the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Several of these appointments were confirmed by acclamation after there were no competing nominations.
Roll-call votes on the consent agenda, budget amendment and America 250 grant acceptance were recorded as affirmative by all commissioners present. No motions failed or were tabled during these items.
The board’s actions on Dec. 15 were procedural approvals common to the end-of-year meeting; staff said documentation and lists of 2025 accomplishments would be emailed to commissioners for reference.
