The Boyertown Area SD policy committee on Tuesday discussed edits to Policy 4.1 to clarify how student representatives to the school board are chosen and how they report to the board.
Superintendent (Speaker 2) told the committee the draft updates the authority and participation sections to reflect that student representatives "attend our legislative meeting, which is always the second board meeting of each month," and to clarify report preparation and submission. He thanked "Missus Kratz" for her work with student representatives and invited "Mister Hauck" to outline the selection process.
Mister Hauck described the current practice: outreach in March to current 10th graders to identify candidates, an interview panel composed of the principal, the student council adviser, current student board representatives and administration, and in prior years sometimes a board representative. He said the process typically yields roughly "8 or 9" candidates.
Committee members agreed to language stating that "2 student representatives shall be selected by the BASH interview panel," that no more than one selected representative be a senior, and that the two recommended representatives "shall be approved by the board of school directors." The superintendent said approvals would occur in May or June and new representatives would traditionally be introduced in September.
Committee discussion also adjusted report language. Rather than requiring student council collaboration in all cases, the draft will ask that student representatives "prepare a brief report in conjunction with the board representative and administration at BASH" and submit it for the next board meeting (staff said reports are generally reviewed with the adviser and submitted within about 48 hours).
The committee did not take a final vote on Policy 4.1; staff said the revised language will be brought back for first read at a future committee meeting.
Next steps: the district will update the 4.1 language to include one junior and one senior representative, formalize the interview-panel wording, and return the policy for a first read before the full board.
