Commission schedules review of year-end financials and approves placing budget amendments on Monday agenda

Houston County commissioners reviewed several routine but consequential finance items and agreed to place multiple budget amendments and reports on the Monday agenda for formal action.

The commission heard that the departmental over/under spending summary for fiscal 2024–25 has been prepared and will be presented on Monday; staff said the report is required by law and commissioners were asked to review it beforehand.

On statutory publication, staff said the county must publish the year-end financial report by Dec. 31 for the prior fiscal year; the financials will cover the period ended Sept. 30, 2025. No objections were raised to placing that publication item on next week’s agenda.

Two budget amendments were discussed for placement on the Monday agenda: a $93,835.36 insurance recovery to pay toward a sheriff's office roof replacement (Mister Dixon explained the insurer will cover most costs and the county’s deductible is $5,000), and a $300,000 grant for stormwater projects from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). County Engineer Justin said the $300,000 came from a competitive program (ARPA-funded pool) that distributed $2,000,000 statewide with a $300,000 per-applicant cap and that the county had already completed the work; the money will reimburse completed projects.

What was decided: commissioners consented, with no objection, to place all these items on Monday’s agenda for formal action. No final budget amendments were adopted in this meeting; the items were set for the next meeting’s formal vote.
