Antonio Murphy presented a 2022–2025 progress update on Killeen’s Parks Master Plan, saying systemwide park acreage rose by about 101 acres and trail mileage increased from 8.9 miles to 11.13 miles (an increase of roughly 2.23 miles). Murphy detailed renovations and additions at multiple parks, funding sources that included ARPA, the CIP and CDBG, and partnerships with KISD, the Armed Forces YMCA and local nonprofits.
Murphy highlighted completed and planned work: playground and amenity upgrades, long-branch pool improvements, addition of shade structures, ADA and trail work, and planned construction of a park maintenance facility. He said the city planted 145 trees across several projects and has pursued sponsorship agreements and other funding commitments for major facilities.
Council members asked about trail and sidewalk connectivity, partnerships with the school district to expand programming and how many additional parks or recreation centers are needed. Murphy said connectivity is an active planning focus and estimated that, depending on growth rates, the city may need roughly five to 10 additional parks or facilities over the next 10–15 years; he also signaled continuing efforts to diversify funding and use MOUs with partners to expand programming.
The council thanked staff for the update and encouraged continued emphasis on connectivity and varied facility types to serve a growing population.
