Kiel council accepts Alderman Shuey’s resignation, opts not to fill seat until April election

The Kiel City Council on Nov. 18 voted to accept the resignation of Alderman Shuey of the 4th District, effective Dec. 2, 2025, and then considered how to fill the resulting vacancy.

After discussing options — holding a special election (which would impose additional city costs), leaving the seat vacant until the regular April election, or appointing someone by application — the council chose to leave the seat vacant until the April election. The motion to leave the seat open until the April election was seconded by Broker and recorded as carried in the meeting transcript.

Council members asked about quorum effects and timing. Members clarified that the council would continue to operate with its remaining seats and that administrative staff would prepare the necessary notices and timelines related to the vacancy and the upcoming election.

The council also voted unanimously to accept the resignation itself by roll call. Implementation steps assigned to the city clerk include preparing public notice of the vacancy and confirming election timelines; staff were directed to return with any further procedural requirements at a subsequent meeting.
