Kiel council accepts resignation, approves contracts and schedules sewer-rate hearing

Kiel’s city council met Nov. 18 and approved a series of routine items, including the acceptance of a resignation, temporary appointments and a calendar date for a public hearing on a proposed sewer rate increase.
The council voted 5-0 to accept the resignation of Alderman Shuey, effective Dec. 2, 2025, and then voted to leave the 4th District seat vacant until the April election rather than hold a special election. Council members discussed options including appointment by application or holding a costly special election before deciding to wait until the April vote.
The council also appointed Bill to the city’s planning commission to serve until the April election; that appointment passed on a 5-0 roll-call vote. A certified survey map dividing the Petrie properties (Lot 1 to remain in Schleswig; Lot 2 in the city with an easement on the south side) was approved unanimously after the planning commission recommendation.
By motion the council set a public hearing on a proposed 2026 sewer rate increase for Jan. 13, 2026, at 6 p.m. The council voted 5-0 to amend the 2026 wage resolution to add the Keough Police Department office manager position and set that hourly wage at $30.76. Council members approved alcohol consumption on Fremont Street for an ice-sculpting event planned for Feb. 7, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Procurement and contracts approved by unanimous votes included a quote from Casper Home Improvements for window replacement and repair at the Kiel Community Center for $40,005.72; the purchase of turnout/tourniquet gear for the Gil Fire Department, noted at $24,000; and a three-year custodial contract with BBS LLC for city buildings. The council accepted listed donations, approved receipts and disbursements, and voted to pay all bills.
The meeting adjourned after the votes. No substantive public comment was offered during the public comment period.
