Grant County magistrates approve minutes and claims; sheriff reports November activity and staffing

Grant County magistrates convened Dec. 2 and unanimously approved the Nov. 18, 2025 meeting minutes and claims and transfers dated Dec. 2, 2025, before hearing departmental reports and public comments.
Sheriff Dennis Schweitzer presented his office—s November activity figures, saying, "For November, the sheriff's office responded to 898 calls for service. We opened 55 investigations, made 41 arrests, 3 investigated collisions. We issued 46 citations. We served 268 criminal and civil summonses. We completed 199 auto inspections and traveled 920 miles for fugitive transports. We also did 59.5 hours in courtroom security." He told magistrates three deputies graduated last month and are in the field training officer program, one new hire will begin online training Dec. 15 and the office remains recruiting to fill one open position.
The magistrates also received the judge—s update on the Kiefer-Lawrenceville Road bridge: grading and welding work was reported as underway ahead of winter weather, and road crews were active overnight clearing snow after a vehicle breakdown and a roadway fire restricted work briefly.
During citizen address, Debbie Angel of Grand Canyon News asked about the county—s sale of property on ‘‘Hopperton—— and whether proceeds could be used to support the county's tire shredder program. County staff said surveys and a successful perk test were pending before a deed could be prepared, and that the tire shredder—s location and the property sale are separate matters; staff said proceeds could "possibly" be used toward shredder-related costs but gave no definitive commitment.
