The El Segundo Unified School District Board voted to adopt a revised kindergarten-through-fifth-grade report card on Dec. 9, following presentations from the elementary report card committee and site principals.
Principals Rose Ahrens (Center Street School) and Carrie Olastian (Richmond Street School) described a collaborative process that included grade-level teachers, site administrators, educational specialists, and parent input through surveys and an information night. The committee's stated goals were to create a clearer, family-friendly report card aligned to essential standards and to ensure a coherent K–5 progression.
Key changes the board approved include: moving the updated 'habits for success' section to the front-left of the report card so families see social-emotional and work habits first; revising academic scoring from a 4‑point to a 3‑point scale to emphasize mastery of essential standards; and providing consistent language around achievement levels so a score means the same across grade levels and classrooms.
Board action: Dr. Young recommended approval and the board adopted the report card (item 10a) by a 4–0 voice vote.
Why it matters: The revisions are intended to clarify expectations for parents and align classroom practice with district priorities around essential standards and the graduate profile. Teachers will record growth beyond the standard in the comment section rather than via an expanded numeric scale.
