Board members at the Lynchburg City Public Schools meeting raised questions about staff pay scales, including concerns that American Sign Language (ASL) teachers are not on the same pay grade as other teachers.
S1 asked why ASL teachers were on a different pay grade. Dr. Majette (S5) said she did not have the historical context and that administration is ‘‘digging through’’ past practices. She said the district is compiling all board and community requests into a single document so costs can be assessed together and to avoid making selective adjustments without broader data.
On substitutes, S6 noted a previous issue with substitute bus driver pay and praised the administration for addressing that concern. S2 described differences between substitute and contracted employees, including that substitutes do not receive district-paid insurance and that those back-end savings should be considered when evaluating substitute pay. S6 and others said a comprehensive compensation study would be the appropriate way to identify which groups are lagging market rates and to support any permanent pay adjustments.
Dr. Majette said the district plans to examine comparable positions, may commission a compensation study in the coming year, and will bring recommendations forward rather than making piecemeal moves that could create new disparities. No formal pay changes were approved at the meeting.
