Survey Shows Strong Preference for Aug. 18 Start; Board Debates Tradeoffs for 2027–28 Calendar

District officials reviewed results of a calendar survey for the 2027–28 school year at the Dec. 9 study session and said parents, students and employees overall favored one option. "Calendar C is 70%," a staff presenter said, describing an August 18 start date, a two‑week winter break and an end date before Memorial Day.
Board members discussed competing values — a later start in exchange for a longer winter break, teacher workload and negotiated elements of the calendar (professional development, comp days). Several members encouraged following the survey majority while noting the board retains discretion under policy. Staff said the calendar adoption at the business meeting would involve selecting start/end dates and breaks while other details (semester end dates, PD days) can be adjusted later in negotiations.
The board did not take a final vote in the study session; members asked staff to post survey results publicly and to document turnout (roughly 4,000 combined responses, presenters said) when the calendar is returned for action.
