The Villa Park City Council on Monday authorized a geotechnical investigation for Valley Drive pavement distress and cracks, approving a contract with PA and Associates not to exceed $9,570.
City staff described recurring and worsening cracks and sinkhole‑like failures on sections of Valley Drive and said the work is intended to identify root causes so the rehabilitation design will be durable rather than a short‑term patch. "We don't want to just peel off 2 inches, repave it, and then have the same problem down the road," staff said.
Council asked whether the consultant will perform coring and independent analyses. Staff confirmed the scope includes core drilling and site testing and that the consultant will coordinate with the street‑rehabilitation design team and engineers.
Council members asked about potential private property responsibilities for slopes adjacent to the roadway and said staff should notify neighbors where borings will take place; staff agreed to provide notifications.
Council approved the contract 5–0. The studies will inform design options that could include grout injection, retaining structures or other remedies depending on subsurface findings.
