Greenville — The City Council on Dec. 11 authorized the acquisition of two parcels (tax parcel 22505 at about 84.5 acres and parcel 2133 at about 42 acres) for a negotiated total price of $1,941,650 to support a proposed sports complex and related park amenities.
Recreation and capital projects staff presented a multi-step planning history, including a feasibility study that evaluated site parking, access, topography, utilities and environmental constraints. Staff said the study found no constraints that would prevent moving forward and that a draft concept was designed to avoid floodways while accommodating a 12-field baseball and softball complex.
Officials said the sports complex is intended to attract tournaments and sports tourism, with an anticipated need to host hundreds of teams and thousands of visitors during peak events. Council discussed community benefits including walking trails, playgrounds and additional recreational opportunities, and approved the purchase by unanimous vote.
The acquisition is funded from previously approved sports-complex project funds; staff will proceed to next steps including design, permitting and community engagement on amenities and programming.
