Greenville — The City Council on Dec. 11 approved the purchase of two homes constructed by Pitt Community College as part of the 50-in-10 affordable-housing initiative. Staff recommended acquiring the units to expand affordable homeownership inventory and support trades education.
Program staff said Home 1 would be purchased for $98,000 and Home 2 for $85,000; both are roughly 1,300 square feet with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Dr. Maria Farr of Pitt Community College described the partnership as a workforce and community benefit: students in the construction program build homes to neighborhood standards while gaining hands-on experience.
Council members praised the partnership as a cost-effective way to increase affordable housing supply and a training pipeline for skilled trades. "You can't build a house for that price," one council member said during debate, noting the value of the program for prospective low- and moderate-income buyers. The council voted 6-0 to authorize the purchases.
