Board approves posting for intervention teacher and alternative education principal

The board approved two staffing actions during the special meeting session.
First, Superintendent Matt Gross requested permission to post an intervention teacher/behavior position to support East Rapids Elementary. Gross said additional Title I funds available this fall cover the remainder of this year; continued funding for 2026–27 would be considered in the regular budget process. The motion to approve posting the position was moved by Melissa, seconded by David and approved by voice vote.
Second, Gross asked the board to approve posting a 12-month alternative education principal who would oversee the Area Learning Center (ALC), the Itaskan Education Center (IEC) and the Grand Rapids Area Virtual Academy (GRAVA). Gross said administrative workload has increased for several assistant principals and that restricted ALC funds, tuition billing from IEC and current GRAVA enrollment (reported at about 70 students, above original budgeted enrollment of 40–50) could cover much of the position—s cost. Board members discussed optics of adding an administrator while other positions were reduced, potential cost offsets and how the new role might shift existing duties. The motion to approve posting the alternative education principal was moved and approved by voice vote.
Both postings will proceed to recruitment in the spring with budget placement for 2026–27 considered through the usual budget process.
