Spring ISD board adopts 2026–27 calendar Option A after survey shows majority support

The Spring ISD board voted to adopt Calendar Option A for the 2026–27 school year at its Nov. 4 meeting.

Background and recommendation: Dr. Tingle, calendar committee chair, presented two draft calendars. Calendar A mirrors the current 2025–26 schedule with a fall break, a full midwinter break, intervention days for targeted student support, and added parent‑teacher conference half‑days. Calendar B includes one additional instructional day (fewer days off) but does not contain a full midwinter break and omits intervention days.

Community input and vote: The district reported 3,466 survey respondents (53% parents) and a majority preference for Calendar A across stakeholder groups. Dr. Tingle explained that intervention days (included in Calendar A) allow small groups of students to come to campus for targeted instruction with full staffing and nutrition services. Trustees voiced concerns about childcare and equity for economically disadvantaged families but ultimately supported Calendar A for its instructional intervention days and community preference. Trustee McDaniel moved and Trustee Adams seconded adopting Calendar Option A. The board approved the motion 6–1.

Practical implications: Calendar A meets the state minimum instructional-minute requirement (75,600 minutes) and includes waiver days that count as instructional minutes where permitted. Staff said adopting a calendar earlier helps implementation, staffing and the district’s budget timeline; they noted the school-choice deadline (Jan. 9) as a factor in timing decisions.

Outcome: Calendar Option A was adopted and will guide instructional planning, staffing, intervention programming and family communications for 2026–27.
