Iron County Commission approves 2026 tentative budget for public hearing, flags rising insurance costs

The tentative budget includes a step-grade adjustment and a cost-of-living allowance under review; approximately 25 requests for new employees were submitted but were not included in the tentative budget pending further review.
Speaker 9 framed the commission’s action as a procedural approval under state code: “On or before November 1, the finance officer shall prepare for the next budget period … a tentative budget,” and he confirmed the timeline for public availability and the next meeting’s more in-depth presentation. Speaker 8 moved to approve the tentative budget as presented by the auditor; Speaker 5 seconded and the motion passed with aye votes recorded.
Next steps: county staff will finalize presentation materials for the next meeting, publish the tentative budget for public review, hold the public hearing in two weeks and return for a final vote in December.
