Board authorizes MOU with City of Havelock for county-owned building inspections

The Craven County Board of Commissioners authorized the chairman to execute a memorandum of understanding with the City of Havelock that will have the county perform building inspections on county-owned buildings and allow the city's inspector to shadow county inspectors to accumulate hours toward Level 2 certification.
Planning Director Chad Strong said the city's inspector currently holds Level 1 certification and the MOU will address certification gaps for inspections that require Level 2 credentials. Commissioners noted the arrangement is similar to existing interlocal agreements with other municipalities and that the county's fee schedule should be cost-competitive; staff said the county's fee schedule is slightly lower than a nearby city's and the arrangement could be a cost savings for Havelock.
After brief questions and confirmation that this is the first such MOU of this type with Havelock, the board authorized the chairman to sign the agreement by roll call.
