The Harlingen City Commission on Nov. 20 approved several zoning actions on first reading, including two rezoning requests and a code amendment to authorize model homes and model‑home sales offices in residential and planned development districts.
Commissioners approved an ordinance to rezone Lot 9, Medical Subdivision (properties at 1616 and 1620 North Ed Carey Drive) from office to general retail following a staff presentation and a motion to approve. The commission separately approved on first reading a rezoning of about 13.58 acres south of Wilson Road (Survey 140, L.L. Adams Subdivision) from an undesignated district to general retail; staff noted the application described the use only as "commercial."
The commission also voted unanimously on first reading to amend Chapter 111 of the city code to authorize model homes, model‑home sales offices and home identification signs in single‑family and planned development zoning districts. Commissioners discussed the applicant materials and, in one rezoning, asked staff whether the specific commercial uses were identified.
Each of these zoning ordinances advanced on first reading; further hearings or a second reading may be required for final adoption under city procedures.
