Cumberland County commissioners re-elect Kirk J. Devier as chair; Veronica B. Jones named vice chair

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 1 re-elected Kirk J. Devier as chairman and selected Veronica B. Jones as vice chair for the coming year.
The nomination for Devier was moved by Commissioner Counsel and a motion to elect Devier by acclamation was made by Commissioner Tyson; the motion passed with Commissioners Tyson, Commissioner Counsel, Vice Chair Veronica B. Jones, Chairman Devier, Commissioner Patel and Commissioner Fairclough recorded as voting in favor and Commissioner Adams recorded in opposition. The board chair said the vote installed Devier to serve another term as chair.
Devier used his remarks to lay out the board's policy priorities. "Clean, safe drinking water remains my top priority," he said, and he pledged continued investment in water and sewer infrastructure countywide. He also listed continued commitment to public education, partnerships with local training institutions to build a workforce in health care and trades, and a focus on regional amenities.
Devier said the board has allocated funding for mental-health services and cited a $30,000,000 mental health diversion facility included in the board's budget. He described that project as part of a broader effort to coordinate 9-1-1 services and mental-health response in partnership with the city.
The board also voted to install Veronica B. Jones as vice chair after nominations opened. Commissioner Fairclough moved to close nominations and elect Jones by acclamation; an objection was recorded and the matter proceeded to a vote. A majority selected Jones as vice chair for the next year.
