The Board of Regents voted to recognize and approve consolidation of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) into a single administrative unit accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

President Jeff Gold told the board that on Nov. 11, 2025 the university received HLC confirmation of the consolidation request and that a vote in favor would authorize him to set a formal transaction date once final procedural steps with the HLC and the U.S. Department of Education are completed. “I recommend this to you for approval of this next step,” Gold said.

Board members spoke broadly in favor, saying the change is intended to align research accounting, streamline operations and create clearer student pathways between campuses. One regent cited the expected effect on research rankings if UNL and UNMC research expenditures are combined, a change the board said could strengthen national competitiveness and fundraising opportunities.

Chancellor Bennett described the move as part of a commitment “to excellence” and said separate campus governance structures — faculty senates, student senates and staff advisory councils — will continue. Bennett and other administrators highlighted practical benefits, such as simplifying transfers for nursing students who currently must apply separately to each campus.

The board approved the item by roll call; each voting regent answered in the affirmative and the chair announced the motion passed. The vote authorizes the president to complete remaining steps with the HLC and the Department of Education and to designate a formal consolidation date when those steps are complete.

The board also voted to enter a closed session later in the meeting to discuss real‑estate transactions and personnel matters, citing authority in Nebraska statutes for executive sessions. The consolidation recognition is effective as an institutional decision of the board; the formal effective date will be set after the administration completes the remaining accreditor and federal notifications.
