Board honors dozens of retirees and hears resident praise and funding concerns

The Derry Cooperative School District School Board devoted a large portion of its May 20 meeting to recognizing retirees and hearing community updates.
Chair Michael Thill read biographies and, where provided, letters from retirees who could not attend. Staff honored included Kim Carpentino (coordinator of student safety), several long-serving food service and instructional staff, school nurses, administrators and teachers whose combined service spans decades. Attending retirees participated in a receiving line and were thanked publicly for their contributions to students and the district.
During the public-comment period, resident Richard Tripp praised the retiree reception and reminded the board about the VFW Patriot’s Pen essay contest and student participation. Jonathan Dugan and David Clapp offered formal thanks to Superintendent Austin Garafalo for years of service; Clapp also warned that state-level adequacy and special-education funding issues have tightened in recent years and urged the board to prepare for a challenging budget process.
Student-member Anthony Henry (Pinkerton Academy representative) provided a short calendar of end-of-year events: prom (May 17), instrumental and choral concerts, open house May 29, senior banquet June 5, senior cookout June 10, senior awards June 12 and graduation June 13; finals run June 11–16. Board members also discussed Pinkerton trustee meetings and transportation consortium planning among six sending towns; the start-time committee at Pinkerton has paused its push to shift start times and will meet again Sept. 9. The board thanked music and theater staff for recent concerts and productions.
The meeting closed with announcements of an upcoming board goal-setting workshop (May 29, first meeting to include incoming superintendent Michael Flynn) and the next regular meeting (June 10). The board adjourned 7-0.
