Moorhead mayor withdraws nomination of husband to airport committee after council objection

A nomination by Mayor Shelly Carlson to appoint her husband, Ron Carlson Jr., to the Moorhead Airport Committee was withdrawn during public council business on Nov. 24 after a councilmember raised ethical and appearance‑of‑favor concerns.

Councilmember Deb White had asked that two appointment items be removed from the consent agenda for separate consideration. Councilmember Heather Niesmeyer moved to appoint Steve Lindas to the Ward 2 vacancy on the Morehead Public Service Committee; after discussion a roll call vote (Nelson No; Matson Yes; Niesmeyer Yes; Moore Yes; White Yes; McDougall No; Hendrickson No) resulted in a 4–3 approval for that appointment.

For the separate nomination to the airport committee, Councilmember Waite objected to Mayor Carlson's nomination of her husband, saying her concern was not about his qualifications but about the integrity and perception of the appointment process. Waite said selecting the mayor’s spouse could discourage other applicants and undermine public confidence. Mayor Carlson replied that her husband has pilot experience and that she had waited for applicants; she offered to withdraw the nomination "more than happy to withdraw my nomination."

Councilmember Ryan Nelson then formally withdrew his motion to appoint Ron Carlson Jr., and the mayor acknowledged the motion had been withdrawn; no roll call vote occurred on that nomination.

Council discussion emphasized the importance of transparent appointment processes and of encouraging broad citizen participation on boards and commissions. No citations to a local nepotism ordinance were made on the record during the discussion.
