Story County environmental health plans pool-inspection pilot, radon outreach and seeks reallocation for private-well grant

Kimberly of Story County Environmental Health briefed the Board of Supervisors on Dec. 9 about several department initiatives.
The department plans a pool-inspection pilot after the start of the new year that would allow county staff to conduct certain preopening inspections (previously handled by the state) for minor repairs or replacement of pumps and filters. Kimberly said the county expects to be able to charge for those inspections under existing contract language, and expects the change to speed inspections by reducing reliance on a limited number of state inspectors.
Kimberly also said next month will be radon-promotion month, with county social postings and free test kits for residents. She reported that snow has slowed septic and transfer inspections and that tanning inspections are expected to be wrapped up before Christmas.
On the private-well grant, Kimberly said the county submitted its first-quarter claim for fiscal year 2026 and had utilized over 46% of its award to date. The department has requested a reallocation from the Department of Human Services and will issue contract amendments if additional funds are awarded.
