Superintendent and academic leader report: attendance up, Head Start review and PLC rollout planned

Superintendent Mister Gatewood and academic leader Doctor Veil delivered reports to the board on district performance and instructional initiatives.
Gatewood thanked staff and highlighted extracurricular and academic successes. He reported the district’s attendance is 95.19%, up 0.36 percentage points from last year (state average ~93%), and noted the district has generally avoided budget amendments during his tenure. He outlined recruitment and retention efforts, said the district has fewer special-education aide vacancies than a neighboring district, and described progress on the teacher incentive allotment (a steering committee and an observation tool with an April submission target). He also described a Head Start site review conducted Dec. 11; an MOU will be prepared if community eligibility is confirmed.
Doctor Veil described professional learning community (PLC) observations across campuses, coaching cycles with teachers, district leadership meetings informed by studies on equity and opportunity, and plans to roll out PLC structures and internalization protocols to principals in January and to teachers thereafter to support STAR preparation.
Trustees asked clarifying questions about PLC terms and DDI (data-driven instruction); Veil defined PLC as professional learning community and DDI as data-driven instruction. The meeting adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
