Council approves temporary parking removal for USD farm show in January 2026
Summary
Council approved a request from USD to expand street closures and temporarily remove parking on North Dakota Street for the Jan. 2026 farm show (setup Jan. 6; teardown Jan. 8). Staff said public safety and departmental coordination (police, fire, EMS, street) are in place and USD will handle barricades and snow removal where barricades block the curb.

The Vermillion City Council on Dec. 1 approved a request from the University of South Dakota to temporarily remove parking on segments of North Dakota Street for the 2026 farm show. City staff (Alex) said the request expands last year’s closures and moves the closure footprint to include additional parking areas to improve visibility for vehicles entering and exiting event lots.
Alex said public safety agencies—Vermillion police, fire, EMS—and the street department reviewed the plan and had no objections, though the street department asked USD to be responsible for snow removal where barricades block the curb. Alex added that USD’s UPD would manage barricades.
Councilors asked whether any accidents had occurred in prior years; Alex said he had not been told of specific accidents but referenced UPD notes that noted limited visibility in past years. Councilor Toller asked whether hotel overflow parking would be affected; Alex said USD would notify nearby hotels and athletics after approval. Penny Swank, identified by staff as a lead farm‑show contact, confirmed she was unfamiliar with the particular submission but that the dates and times were consistent with typical setup and teardown windows.
Councilor Cheeseman moved to approve the temporary parking removal; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote. The council noted the closure applies only during setup and teardown; normal parking would be restored during the event days themselves.
