Road commission update: bridge grants approved, marijuana-tax timing uncertain for county roads

Officials cautioned that a recently enacted state marijuana-tax provision — described as an increase to local revenue streams — faces legal challenges and a possible injunction that could delay collections on Jan. 1. "We are putting together a really solid plan based on that money without the marijuana tax," staff said, adding that if the tax is collected the commission would use it entirely for roads (equipment limited to a seal‑coat machine and a distributor).
The commission also described ongoing distribution of Act 51 gas‑tax payments and emphasized that its priorities remain road maintenance and targeted capital purchases. Staff reminded the board of a Dec. 17 budget hearing and said the road commission is preparing contingency plans if the marijuana-tax revenue is delayed.
Commissioners asked questions about timelines for specific projects, plowing and how private roads can be accepted into the county system; staff described a process involving township special assessments and meeting county construction standards. The road commission said it will report back with more detailed timelines and budget scenarios ahead of the Dec. 17 hearing.
