Board members heard a series of operations updates Nov. 18 tied to the district's strategic plan, covering recruitment, transportation and technology infrastructure.
Human-resources and recruitment staff (Doctor Matillo) reported updated hiring data: additions to the workforce since July 1 include 86 recent hires, 72 return hires, and a total of 3,777 hires this school year in staff counts presented. Matillo highlighted partnerships with North Carolina State University's WolfTrack program and North Carolina Central University to build pipelines for teachers — especially special-education candidates — and noted persistent vacancies in special-education teaching roles.
Transportation staff (Mr. Strickland and team) described recruitment efforts for bus drivers, a key capacity constraint for service, and previewed an internal bus-tracking dashboard intended to improve on-time performance and provide family notifications when buses run late. Staff said DPI inspection scores and efficiency ratings remain metrics the team watches closely.
Technology and infrastructure leaders summarized major systems work: a recent student-information-system implementation (Infinite Campus), migration to a modern Oracle ERP, the rollout of roughly 12,000 Promethean boards (95% complete), distribution cycles for Chromebooks (new devices for 3rd, 6th and 9th graders) and a help-desk workload of about 140,000 tickets. Chief IT staff said staff-device refreshes should last three to four years and that they are analyzing CIP and device-rightsizing options to preserve budget flexibility.
Boardmembers asked for clearer performance metrics and "glows and grows" (strengths and areas for improvement) in future presentations, and staff said they would provide deeper dives and share slides earlier so board members could prepare questions in advance.
