Superintendent highlights All-State music selections and Best Buddies pilot

At the Dec. 15 Springfield SD 186 meeting, the superintendent highlighted student accomplishments and district programs.
Staff announced that students from Franklin Middle School and Springfield High School earned selection to the 2026 Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) All-State programs in instruments including flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trombone, oboe, trumpet and bass clarinet. The superintendent said the students will travel to Peoria in January to represent their schools.
The superintendent also described Best Buddies, a national program piloted at Southeast that pairs peers for ongoing connection; the district's Best Buddies hosted a holiday luncheon with crafts, dancing, and a Santa and Mrs. Claus appearance. Staff thanked community partners who provided coats and toys, including donations described as coming from the Illinois Senate Democratic Caucus and a group called Make a Difference. The superintendent closed the update with reminders about freshman preview night and the Dewey Gymnasium floor completion at Springfield High School.
This portion of the meeting was informational; the board did not vote on program expansion at this session.
