Laconia council sends Human Relations Committee ordinance back for rewrite after contentious public hearing

The Laconia City Council on Dec. 8 heard more than two hours of public testimony about a proposed ordinance to establish the Human Relations Committee (HRC) as a standing city committee. Residents and committee members gave sharply contrasting views before the council voted to refer the ordinance back to the Government Operations and Ordinances Committee for further drafting and review.
Patrick Wood, who identified himself as chair of the Human Relations Committee, opened the public hearing by arguing the HRC is a long‑standing, public, mayor’s committee that has operated transparently.
