Moses Vargas appeared before the New Haven Tax Committee Nov. 25 to request assistance after his restaurant, listed at 369 Grand Avenue, received a multi‑year equipment tax assessment.
Vargas said he runs a small restaurant and had not realized certain equipment taxes were due; he described missed mailings and the difficulty of paying the full amount. "I came in and filed the real list," he said, and asked whether the committee could help with the bill, which he estimated initially at about $2,000.
Committee staff said options include a 90‑day payment arrangement and that interest generally continues to accrue unless the board takes specific action to freeze or reduce it. Staff cited a current account balance of $2,894.70 and suggested a payment plan as a practical option for a small business.
Committee members and staff suggested setting up a 90‑day arrangement or discussing reduced interest during deliberation; the applicant said he was willing to make arrangements but could not pay the entire balance at once. The committee indicated it would review options during deliberation and that staff would notify the applicant after the committee's decision.
Next steps: staff to contact Vargas with the committee's decision and to outline available payment arrangements.
