Racine school board awards $582,346 construction contract, adopts public-engagement change and tables pay increase

The Racine Unified School District Board of Education on Dec. 15 approved several district actions, including the award of a construction contract, a policy modification and procedural decisions about board compensation and delegation.
Administration recommended awarding RFP No. 26-001R for the Gilmore Fine Arts project to Shear Construction Company Inc. for $582,346. "As presented earlier this month at the work session, administration is recommending the board award RFP number 26-001R to Shear Construction Company Inc in the amount of $582,346," the administration representative said; the board voted 7-0 to approve the award.
The board also adopted a modified Operational Expectation 9 (public engagement) after governance committee discussion; Missus Doxey said the governance committee plans to present interpretations of the removed items 3 through 5 at the next governance meeting. "Some of the essence of that, some of the concerns that are addressed in 3 through 5, we will look to see in the interpretations when they are presented at our next governance meeting," Doxey said. The motion to adopt the modified policy passed by unanimous voice vote.
A referral to increase monthly board compensation from $300 to $309 was discussed but tabled for a fuller discussion at the February work session; board members suggested alternatives (for example, a larger flat increase or setting an effective date of July 1) and requested district fiscal staff attend the follow-up meeting. Mister O'Connell, who brought the referral forward, said he supported some increase to encourage community participation. "I really think we need to, keep commendable with inflation on this," O'Connell said.
The board approved legislative committee recommendations for representation at the January assembly, designating Mister O'Connell as delegate and Missus Allen as alternate, and instructed their delegates to accept WASB resolutions as presented but vote NO on resolutions 2 and 10. All motions recorded in the meeting passed by unanimous vote where tallied.
