Berkley planning commission unanimously recommends zoning ordinance cleanup amendments to council

At the Nov. 25 meeting the Berkley Planning Commission unanimously recommended that city council approve a second round of cleanup amendments to the city’s new zoning ordinance.
Kristen, the planning staff presenter, described the package as a set of clarifications encountered since implementing the new code: adding definitions (medical office, outdoor service area), clarifying the process for two-family site layouts, removing egress windows as projections, providing dimensional requirements for compact car spaces, and tightening signage and window-lighting rules in certain districts. Staff also noted a new prohibition on gun shops within 1,000 feet of existing childcare or group daycare homes — an addition requested to mirror similar buffers applied to other sensitive uses.
The commission opened the public hearing on the cleanup amendments, heard no in-person public comment, closed the hearing and voted 7–0 to recommend approval of the ordinance changes to city council. The item will be transmitted to council for final action.
The planning commission also noted the sign section of the zoning ordinance will return as a separate, focused package for additional discussion.
Next steps: staff will forward the recommended cleanup amendment package to Berkley City Council for consideration.
