Board hears athletic facility update; approves up to $350,000 from community education fund for equipment

Ryan Rademacher of JLG Architects updated the St. Cloud Public School District board on the multipurpose athletic facility project, reporting the design is in the construction‑documents phase and the team expects to issue bid pack 2 in January–February with a potential construction start in May 2026 following state review.
Rademacher walked the board through site and floor plans: roughly 169 parking stalls with a designated expansion area; the main entry in the northwest corner; relocated large overhead equipment door to the east for safer trail access; perimeter fencing and buffer zones; a mezzanine level with batting cages and a two‑bay golf simulator area; accessible restrooms including an adult changing station; and interior daylighting and spectator circulation features. He said the project is on track for schedule and budget at this stage.
Amy Scalarud, executive director of finance and business services, presented preliminary equipment estimates of about $700,000 (not final) and requested authority to use up to $350,000 from the Community Education fund balance to cost‑share both permanently affixed and portable equipment. Scalarud said roughly $500,000 of the equipment estimate is for construction‑type items (perimeter netting, permanent scoreboards, golf simulators); the remainder would cover nets, portable bleachers, furniture and maintenance equipment. She told the board the Community Education fund balance was "just over $1.1 million" as of the most recent audit and that anticipated rental revenue through Community Education is expected to help replenish the fund over time.
Boardmember Al Dahlgren moved to approve the requested authority (moved by Al Dahlgren; seconded by Scott Endresen). The board approved the motion by roll‑call vote with board members voting in the affirmative.
Architects and staff answered board questions about exterior lighting (bollards and parking poles and building lighting planned), visibility and graphic treatment for the golf simulator area, static batting cages with a center divider curtain, and camera placement focused on entry points (no secure lockers were specified).
The board’s approval in this meeting was for funding authority only; vendors, final equipment selections and contract awards remain to be determined as construction documents, bidding and state review proceed.
