Alderman Priel announces he will vacate Ward 1 seat effective Nov. 1; board to consider interim appointment

Alderman Priel announced at the Oct. 28 New Bern Board of Aldermen meeting that he will cease to be a legal resident of Ward 1 as of Nov. 1 and that this will be his last official meeting.
"As of November 1, I will no longer be a legal resident in Ward 1," Priel said, adding that he will submit a formal letter of resignation to the city. He asked the board to decide how to fill the vacancy until the newly elected board is seated in December.
Following the announcement, board members moved to place consideration of a Ward 1 appointment at the top of the next agenda. Alderman‑elect Ferguson told the board he would be willing to be seated early if the board chooses to appoint someone prior to the Dec. 9 swearing‑in.
The board voted to add the vacancy appointment to the next agenda; no formal interim appointment was made at the Oct. 28 meeting. Administrative steps for accepting a resignation and processing an appointment will follow the city attorney’s guidance.
