Commission hears neighborhood update; wellness-center use increasing and police will report activity in redevelopment area

Commissioner Morgan gave a neighborhood update at the Dec. 10 meeting, saying several housing and construction projects in the redevelopment area are ongoing and that the commission will receive usage figures for the wellness center next month.
Morgan said the commission will also receive a report from Chief Gallagher of the New Bern Police Department on calls and incident data for the redevelopment area so commissioners can monitor physical and mental health indicators and public-safety patterns in the district. Morgan asked commissioners and committee members to communicate about upcoming community meetings so the commission can be present and hear resident concerns.
Staff and commissioners noted other community groups that participate in neighborhood activity, including block captains, the Duffy Field Residence Council, and the Peoples Assembly, and discussed coordinating attendance between the commission and those groups. Morgan said the redeveloped area is progressing and that the commission will compile information in the new calendar year for ongoing oversight.
